A New Moon and New Year Invites Us to Begin Again
Here are some insights about the opportunities and challenges that this week’s astrology may offer us collectively. If you’re looking to access personalized astrological and self-care insights to help you navigate the now, I’d love to do a Stellar Guidance Session or a Stellar Constellations Session with you. Also, if you’d like to access astrological and tarot insights for January, check out the latest episode of So Divine!, the podcast I co-host with Megan Skinner.
New Moon on Monday.
Not just the title of a song by Duran Duran, one of the flagship bands of 1980s New Wave music, but also a key feature of the astrology of the week. That’s because as mid-Monday arrives, so does a New Moon, offering us an opportunity to begin again and initiate something new. Once again.
Why once again? Because it is a Black Moon, the second New Moon of this month, with the first having occurred on December 1. That one resided in Sagittarius and inspired us to carve out space to further understand our beliefs, our truth, and our desire to invite more quest and exploration into our lives. While Monday’s New Moon has a similar feel of nascency and possibility, it turns our attention to a different realm, given that it takes place in the sign of Capricorn.
With this lunation, we have aaa heightened opportunity to inventory how we spend our resources. It’s a notable time to balance a checkbook, survey investments, or consider an aspect of financial planning we’ve yet to fully explore.
Remember, though, our personal economy of resources is not just limited to our money but also includes our time, energy, skills/talents, and alliances, all of which comprise the capital that we can use to create a richer life. Whether we are allocating these efficiently—and whether they are generating additional assets or incurring liabilities for us—can be very prudent topics to survey in the time around this New Moon. The answers can help us to create a stronger foundation upon which we can build our future.
Loyalty, commitment, and duty may also be important themes during this New Moon. It’s a time for reflecting upon to whom and what we grant our allegiance, seeing those that are worthy of it and those that may not be, and from there considering re-apportioning these precious resources.
Soon after the week begins, a new year begins, a few days into which we find ourselves meeting the Mars/Pluto Opposition. And with this we may experience the emergence of hidden motivations, desires we have kept at bay and/or hatchets we had buried only to realize that they may be gone but not forgotten (and therefore not really gone). It’s not a time to skim the surface but rather to make space for excavation, exhumation, and unearthing as well as paying attention to shadows and projections.
I believe that part of the recipe for navigating a Pluto period is to add the word “really” to your thoughts/questions. Really brings things down a notch and beckons us to move to a deeper level of honesty, which itself feels in harmony with Pluto’s inspirations. In the case of Pluto connecting with warrior Mars, it’s a good time to focus on questions such as:
What do I really want?
What really moves me?
What would really feel motivating?
What do I really want to fight for?
How can I really cultivate my energy?
What really turns me on?
Given Mars’ current retrograde cycle, this is the second of three Mars/Pluto Oppositions we’re moving through. It’s interesting to me that the first occurred (on November 3) just before the U.S. Presidential Election (on November 5) and this one takes place a few days before the certification of the election results (on January 6).
Although this one—and the last in the series that occurs on April 29—is different than the initial one. That one featured Mars in watery Cancer and Pluto in earthy Capricorn. The one this week—and in April—features Mars in fiery Leo and Pluto in airy Aquarius. With this, we may witness a stand-off between individuals and collectives, creativity and science, dynastic elements and democratic visions, and laser-focused luminosity and multi-spectrummed networks. Finding synthesis between—or at least, recognition of— the components of each pair can bring illumination and healing.
As I complete this last missive for 2024, I want to again share how grateful I am to be in community with you.
I wish for you a new year filled with joy, delight, and treasure.
