As astrology continues to make astronomical inroads into pop culture and constellations of people are becoming more interested in accessing the language of the stars, our collective celestial fluency has greatly expanded. With astrology weaving through scores of media outlets and phone apps, cosmic concepts like Mercury Retrograde, Saturn Return, Eclipse Season, and others are becoming more common parlance.
One of the concepts that has experienced meteoric rise of late is that of The Big Three—the trifecta combination of our Sun sign, Moon sign, and Ascendant/Rising sign. And while having a reading with a professional astrologer can gift you with quite nuanced awareness about your entire birth chart, knowing your special zodiacal trifecta gives you a universe of understanding about yourself beyond knowing your Sun sign (that which we answer when queried What’s your sign?).
Why’s that?
First off, think of it this way: while there are 12 different Sun sign profiles, there are 1728 different Big Three combinations (12 Sun signs x 12 Moon signs x 12 Ascendant/Rising signs). Off the bat, this helps us to further perceive how when we say we are an Aries (or Taurus, Gemini, or other sign) it makes sense that we are not just like the other 1/12 of the population born in our same zodiacal month. Additionally, knowing our Big Three allows us a wider vantage point through which to understand ourselves, given that each of the three astro factors represents something unique.
For example, the sign of our Sun reflects attributes of our deep essence, our conscious mind, ego, and higher Self. It represents the manner in which we shine and what gives us vitality. It signifies qualities we are learning to embrace/express as we quest along our pathway to individuation and self-realization.
Our Moon sign provides us with a lens to understand our emotional nature, and how we relate to and express our feelings. Through our Moon, we can become more attuned to our habitual responses, instinctive inclinations, and the memory imprints that arise from our subconscious mind. It can help us to further affirm what we need to feel at home and to nourish ourselves, as well as our perception and experience of our mother and/or being a mother.
Our Ascendant sign (also known as the Rising sign) is thought to describe aspects of our image and personal style. Upon first meeting someone, it’s usually the qualities of our Ascendant that others perceive and source when describing us. The Ascendant sign, as well as the Moon sign, can also point us to the parts of our body in which we may be apt to hold our stress.
How to Find Your Big Three
If you don’t yet know your Moon and Ascendant sign, and want to discover your Big Three, you can readily do so by casting your chart online. One place to do so for free is on the website of So Divine!, the monthly podcast I co-host with Megan Skinner. Please note that you need your exact birth time to cast your chart and discover these placements since the Ascendant/Rising sign is tied to an exact moment (and every third day the Moon travels through two signs and so you may not be able to pinpoint that either without knowing the time you were born).
Let’s Explore Your Big Three!
